A number of candidates are running unopposed for state offices June 6, including local Democratic Assemblyman John Laird.

For California secretary of state, our choice for the Democratic nomination is state Sen. Debra Bowen, who is opposed by Deborah Ortiz. Bowen is chair of the Legislature's Elections Committee, where she has worked for increased safeguards to ensure votes are accurately tabulated. Bowen clearly understands that the secretary of state's main job is to safeguard elections. If she wins, she'll oppose Santa Cruz Republican and incumbent Secretary of State Bruce McPherson in November.
