Although state Sens. Debra Bowen, D-Redondo Beach, and Deborah Ortiz, D-Sacramento, share the same title and first name, they bring very different qualifications to the Democratic primary for California secretary of state.
For Ortiz, this position seems to be a stepping stone -- a way to maintain a job in state government until the next one comes along. Bowen, on the other hand, seems born for this none-too-glamorous, often technocratic role.
During her tenure in the Legislature, Bowen has been a reliable advocate for improved voting systems and increasing the public's access to government. As secretary of state, she would continue her crusade to bolster the quality and integrity of California elections.
A true professional with a nonpartisan approach to governance, Bowen would be a good fit for the Secretary of State's Office.
