Opening government with open source software
Yesterday, Debra chaired a hearing in Sacramento to discuss the use of open source software in electronic voting machines — a potential solution for restoring the public’s confidence in our elections system.

This is just another example of the kind of leadership that Debra is providing for elections reform here in California — and just more evidence that Debra is the best person to become our next Secretary of State.
Next Thursday, February 16th, Debra will continue to lead the charge, holding a hearing in Menlo Park to talk about the state’s flawed process of certifying new voting machines. The hearing will feature a number of expert witnesses, including “researchers from across the country who are studying voting technology.”

Unfortunately, open source software does not imply open and fair elections. Since we’ll never be able to see what goes on in the microprocessors inside a voting machine, any use of computerized voting or ballot-reading equipment will necessarily lack transparency. Therefore they can have no place in fair and open elections.
If we weren’t so thoroughly conditioned to want secret ballots (as if the anonymity of our vote fulfilled a perceived but nonexistent requirement for privacy), elections would be run by public vote with public oversight over the counting of paper ballots.

And don’t lose sight of the big picture either: That the electoral system also suffers from 1) A voting district protection racket in which Democrats and Republicans have colluded to create a situation where *”Over 90% of Americans live in congressional districts that are essentially one-party monopolies”.
